We would like to extend an invitation to all PorColombians to become contributing writers for PorColombia.net. Articles must have a written element as a central part of the story but you may use any other mediums like photos, slideshows, video, audio, and interactive features to tell your story better.
One paramount goal of our organization is to uplift Colombia's image abroad and what a better way to do it than write about it.
Don't forget that toggling between your busy college life
and extracurricular activities can be challenging at times. We will
work with you while your story takes shape and until it is ready to
publish.
First, you need to get in contact with
our national editor-in-chief Carlos Macias to either pitch your own
story idea or choose a topic from the following list:
- Valentine's Day stories: We would like to profile a couple or couples who have tied the knot or are planning to do so in 2010.
-
10-year anniversary of 9/11: Any PorColombian lost a loved one that
day? Or how was your community affected by this terrorist attack? Any
special memories that you would like to share with us?
- Immigration stories: Immigration reform will play a significant role in 2010 across the board.
-
Forced displacement: Our organization is supporting the fight against
this social problem that affects millions back in Colombia.
-
Gay/Lesbian issues: The issue of gay marriage and equality rights is
also hot, and it is important to talk about how these issues play
inside our organization.
- Movie, theater, or music reviews made in Colombia.
- Propose your own.
After
agreeing on a topic, you can set a realistic and workable deadline for
your story. Word limit is flexible, starting at 350 and up to 800 words.
You will get the byline and credit for any photos or interactive media
you design. These stories will be posted in PorColombia.net as well as
publicized via PorColombia's Facebook and Twitter accounts. Please
remember to fully document your article and to avoid any form of
plagiarism.
Regarding story formats, we are looking for the following types of articles:
-
Program summaries: These are 400-500-word articles summarizing events
done by your local chapters. These should be done after an academic
event with panelists and/or invited speakers. For an example, please
visit this link: sample article. The article
may also include photos, video, or audio from the event itself.
-
Interviews: If you get the chance to interview someone relevant to
Colombia, to our organization, or to your local chapter, you may work
on an interview in the Q&A style, no longer than 600 words.
-
People profiles: In PorColombia, we have amazing human capital so we
should share it with our audience. Basically, we want to read about
successful PorColombians and learn from their experience and inspire
others to follow their steps. Also, you may profile parents, family
members, or friends as long as their activities impact our
organization, your community, or Colombia.
-
Profiles about Colombia: We would like to see articles about towns,
cities, and tourist attractions in Colombia. Tell us more about food,
holidays, people, customs, etc... You may even chronicle a recent trip
to Colombia and share your experiences. These stories should be short
but resonating articles of 350 to 500 words. You can include any
multimedia elements you feel will help you tell your story better.
